1. In my country you are rather not known. Try to close
up The
Prowlers to heavy metal fans in Poland.
The
Prowlers were born in Rome (Italy) during winter 1996. As almost every Band at
the beginning of its activity, our Gigs where based on playing Cover Songs. But
after about one year of Live Shows all around Italy, we started to write
original music.In 1999 we recorded our first Demo CD.
The quality of this work was bad due to a total "home-made" production so, in
December 2000, we decided to record a new CD into professional Studios.
This has been titled "A Descent into the Maelstrom", taking inspiration by the
E.A. Poe novel, and sent to several Labels, Web-zines and Magazines all around
the World. The response has been more than positive and we received some
Recording Contract proposals, but we didn't reach any agreement. So, one year
later, we recorded another Demo CD titled "Souls Thieves" and sent it only to
Labels. After few months we found an agreement with the Italian Label "Northwind
Records" and signed our first Recording Contract. Our Debut Album “Souls
Thieves” came out in November 2004.
2. We can find Your music on three compilations: “United We Are”, “Defenders Of Metal Vol.1” & “Power From The Underground Vol.2”. How do you evaluate Your part in these projects?
We think that participating to Compilations is a very good way to promote the Band in foreign countries. Thanks to the French “United we are” our popularity reached the USA, so, first MIB Music, then JCM Records, asked us to participate to their Compilations.
3. I bet you’ve grown up by heavy metal of the 80-ties. How has it weigh on the fact that You play such music today?
You’ve got it, Marcin! The NWOBHM had a strong influence on our songwriting, but we also like Power Metal and Prog. Actually the songs that we are working on now follow much more these last two kinds of music.
4. The beginning of The Prowlers is marked on the year 1996. But the record ”Souls Thieves” has come out in 2003. I suppose You had a lot of patience and stubbornness to wait for the moment your dreams will come truth, seven years. I have right?
Oh, yes! Unfortunately the musical market is suffering a great depression, due to the increasing of the Internet mp3 exchange and the rise of CDs price in the shops. This is reflecting on Labels skepticism on accepting brand new Bands, that’s why it took so much time for us to find an agreement. We hope that for our next Album it will be different!
5. Your first
album is a huge dose of real heavy metal. How do you evaluate it and how have
your fans greet it?
We decided to play what we were feeling in that period, without caring about music fashions like “Nu metal” or “Epic Metal”. As you can read on the Reviews inside our Website, people understood that we didn’t want to invent a new style, but we are trying to evolve Heavy Metal. Of course, the main purpose is to obtain our own sound, distinguish us from other Bands!
6. Although you have issued “Soul Thieves” you are still underground band. Are there any chances that it will change soon?
We really hope that recording our First Album will remove from us the “cliché” of beginners! For our second Album we will try contact all the most important Metal Labels, sending them our new songs + the Debut Album as a presentation. We really hope to find someone who will trust in our music…and in us!
7. Watching your videoclip to the “Soul Thieves” you can suppose that Your concerts attracts many heavy metal maniacs and that you like running in the forest, haha! To be serious now, I suppose a lot of people come to see The Prowlers live?
The video has a particular story: one fan from Germany sent us the scenes in the forest with our music as soundtrack, proposing us to use it as a video. As you can imagine we’ve been really surprised of such a “present”, so we decided to add some live scene and the result is quite nice!! Concerning our Live shows I can tell you that in Italy we are quite popular (in Rome we can say that we are VERY popular!) and people have always fun during our gigs, that’s why they always coming in great number!! We like the forests and mountains…But I prefer going to the beach on summer!! ;-)
8. The bands from Italy that have become very popular in the last few years are Rhapsody and White Skull. Are there any bands in Your country, except You, which can bid for joining to above bands?
Our friends Novembre are quite popular in Germany and in the USA, but we have to remember also Lacuna Coil and Labyrinth!
9. Comparing the metal scene in Your country it’s not hard to find that it drops behind USA, Germany or Great Britain. Do You think that heavy metal in Italy has a future?
No. I don’t think that in the future things will change in Italy. Heavy Metal will always remain as an underground phenomena, with all the positive and negative aspects of this.
10. Now the question concerning to the quite different area than music. On Your internet site, I’ve read that You are a football fan. So should I congratulate You AS ROMA or LAZIO?
Hey! You are a great observer! Hehehe…Well, me, Napo, Fabio the singer and Max (keyboards) are for A.S. Roma (and during this period you cannot congratulate with us…). Fabio the guitar player is for Juve (Buuuuu!!!!) and Sandro doesn’t care about soccer…
11. We are slowly closing to the end. What are Your nearest plans and how will You surprise Your fans?
We are
working on new songs, 8 are almost completed. When we’ll have 10 of them we’ll
record a new Demo and will send it to Labels, hoping to find an agreement. We
hope that we’ve surprised our fans with our Video! For sure we’ll surprise them
with our new songs, they sound great and we’re really satisfied about them!
12. Finally I
ask You for a few words for the polish fans of metal.
Well, maybe I will astonish you, but I’ve spent few months in Poland last year due to my job. I know well Poznan and I’ve also visited Wroclaw and Gdansk. Your beer is great and polish girls…WOW!!! We hope to come there to play some concert very soon!!!

I The Prowlers
hanno rilasciato un ottimo debut album, un vero concentrato di Heavy Metal.
Nonostante i loro trascorsi come cover band degli Iron Maiden (il nome del gruppo
è ancora lì a testimoniarlo!) non sono neppure troppo derivativi,
certo mostrano un evidente attaccamento alle origini ma alla resa dei conti
risultano freschi e coinvolgenti. Al momento di intervistarli è però
venuto fuori il mio animo da "carogna" e ho cercato di provocarne
il batterista Claudio “Dr. K” Cappabianca, il quale ha superato
brillantemente le prime domande tranello, proseguendo poi un'intervista piuttosto
interessante.
Vi sembrava davvero il caso di fare uscire un album di
cover degli Iron Maiden? Volevate sfruttare il successo di "Dance of Death"
e della loro recente calata dalle nostra parti?
Iron che? Scusa, ma non ho idea di quale gruppo tu stia parlando...E' per caso
un altro gruppo emergente? Scherzi a parte, in Dance of Death secondo noi c'è
ben poco da sfruttare...
Come... eppure si tratta di un album che ha scalato le
classifiche. Non credi che sia importante una sempre maggiore visibilita' del
metal? Oppure ritieni che questo finisca con il favore solamente i gruppi piu'
famosi ma non le band emergenti?
Beh, sono entrati in classifica così rapidamente perché hanno
venduto moltissime copie in pochissimo tempo, ma altrettanto rapidamente ne
sono usciti, mi pare.
Parlavo proprio ieri col nostro Label Manager e lui mi spiegava che ormai chi
acquista CD originali preferisce andare sul sicuro, piuttosto che spendere dai
17 ai 20 Euro per un gruppo emergente deludente. Il problema è che al
giorno d'oggi chiunque può autoprodursi un CD (ai tempi del vinile era
ben diverso) per cui è facile incappare in albums prodotti male. Per
questo motivo abbiamo reso disponibili degli estratti mp3 dei nostri brani sul
nostro sito, in modo che le persone interessate possano rendersi conto dell'ottima
qualità dei brani e delle registrazioni ed assicurarli sul fatto che
comprando il nostro album non si va incontro a brutte sorprese!
Non credo che gli Iron Maiden primi in classifica favoriscano le band emergenti,
anzi, è una chiara prova del discorso che ho appena fatto.
Ho notato che da "Dance of Death" non avete
ripreso nessun brano, non vi piace l'ultimo album dei Maiden?
E' un buon Album, diciamo che non da l'idea del disco fatto solo per passare
il tempo e fare soldi, c'è un po' d'impegno dentro...
Resta il fatto che le 3 chitarre sono abbastanza inutili, ma il buon Janick
potevano mandarlo a vendere la frutta al mercato dopo il rientro di Adrian??
E poi sei così sicuro che i Maiden non abbiano ripreso qualcosa dai nostri
Demo, ormai in giro per il mondo da anni?Hehehe!
Ok ok... scherzavo, ma non potete svilire gli sforzi che
ho dovuto fare per evitare di scrivere Iron Maiden ogni 2 frasi! Vabbe'... oltre
ai Maiden quali sono i gruppi che avrei dovuto citare?
Mah, in queste prime settimane dopo l'uscita del CD, ci hanno accostato a gruppi
di cui non conoscevamo neanche il nome...Quello che ti posso dire è che
ci sono contaminazioni NWOBHM, Metal Teutonico ed un pizzichino di prog...Ma,
d'altra parte, ti sfido a trovare un gruppo completamente estraneo ad influenze
di qualunque genere!!
Chiudo definitivamente la parentesi pseudo-demenziale,
sono parecchi anni che vi davate da fare tra concerti e demo prima di firmare
per le Steelborn Records, così anche per fugare eventuali dubbi sorti
a chi ha letto le prime domande sarebbe utile che riassumeste la storia dei
The Prowlers...
Allora...I The Prowlers sono nati nel 1996 come Tribute Band dei Maiden, lo
scopo era quello di divertirci emulando i beniamini d'infanzia...E ci siamo
riusciti abbastanza bene (a divertirci, intendo), ma dopo un paio d'anni, quando
ormai l'intesa tra i componenti della Band era quasi perfetta, è nata
spontaneamente l'idea di percorrere la strada dei brani originali. Abbiamo registrato
un primo Demo "casareccio" nel 1999 e, nel Dicembre 2000, un secondo
Demo intitolato "A Descent into the Maelstrom". Quest'ultimo ci ha
dato molte soddisfazioni a livello Italiano ed internazionale (vedi le recensioni
sul nostro Sito Web) e ci ha aperto le porte per la registrazione del nostro
Debut Album. Siamo stati contattati, infatti, prima dalla Limb Music (Raphsody)
, poi dalla Shark Records (altra etichetta Tedesca) ma non solo non abbiamo
trovato un accordo, abbiamo anche perso del tempo prezioso!
L'Italiana Steelborn Records (Kaledon, Heraldry, ecc) invece, si è rivelata
molto più concreta, portandoci alla firma del contratto ed alla stampa
del CD (Ottobre 2003) nell'arco di qualche mese!
Andiamo a curiosare nel disco, come è nata l'idea
di "Fight against the Dragon"?
L'idea (testo e musica) proviene dal nostro cantante, è la storia di
un cavaliere che, come hanno già tentato di fare i suoi avi, deve sconfiggere
un drago che ogni 100 anni attacca il suo villaggio.Un' invocazione al tentativo
di superare i propri limiti ed a credere fino in fondo in ciò che si
fa. Il brano è abbastanza lungo (8 min. c.ca) e durante gli ultimi 3
anni ha subito svariate modifiche e arrangiamenti rispetto alla versione registrata
sul nostro primo Demo, ma è così che lavoriamo in fase di composizione.
Un'idea che parte dal singolo viene sviluppata tutti insieme...
So che "A Descent in the Maelstrom" è
ispirata ad un racconto di Edgar Allan Poe, a livello lirico come si sviluppano
gli altri pezzi?
I testi dei nostri pezzi sono tutti piuttosto introspettivi, il significato?
Beh chi scrive il testo sicuramente vuole esternare e trasmettere qualcosa ma
non è detto che quello che vede lui in quelle parole sia lo stesso che
vede un altro. Ognuno che ascolta può inserirci sopra le proprie paure,
angosce, ideali, ricordi, ecc.. e così trova un significato nuovo e completamente
diverso da quello proposto da noi.
Ti faccio comunque una rapida track-by-track: "Souls Thief" parla
delle paure più inconsce che risiedono in noi: racconta di un demone
che ti ruba l'anima se lo guardi negli occhi. "Memories" è
una riflessione sull'importanza dei ricordi nella vita di una persona; "It"
è una critica al sopravvento che la tecnologia sta prendendo sulla fantasia
dell'uomo; "Once Again" è uno sfogo contro la falsità
e le menzogne; per "Fight against the Dragon" ti ho già risposto;
"Incubus" è il delirio di una mente malata; "The Voice"
bisognerebbe chiederlo agli Ultravox; "Freeze on the Line" è
un testo nato nel momento in cui la "chiamata alle armi" ha tolto
un anno di vita al nostro cantante Fabio; "A Descent into the Maelstrom"
narra di una barca di pescatori che s'imbatte nel pericoloso gorgo che si forma
a largo dei mari norvegesi, forse ancora un testo sull'ignoto e sulla fatalità...
Chi sono questi "ladri d'anime"? Semplicemente
dei mostri/vampiri come quello rappresentato nella copertina oppure ci sono
delle metafore dietro?
Ribadisco il concetto di prima: noi possiamo anche dirti che il CD va visto
più in chiave realistico/moderna, in un mondo dove troppe persone hanno
smesso di pensare con la propria testa, lasciando che siano altri a decidere
per loro, si tende sempre di più ad adeguarsi agli altri, piuttosto che
ad esprimere la propria individualità. Ma alla fine, come detto nella
precedente domanda, sono le esperienze personali di chi ascolta a dare un significato
ai testi.
Come siete arrivati a scegliere come cover di "The
Voice", un brano davvero bello degli Ultravox?
E' una delle più belle canzoni di una band che ho sempre amato, gli Ultravox,
appunto. Ho sempre pensato che se un gruppo deve presentare una cover in un
album da studio, lo deve fare con un brano non troppo conosciuto e che abbia
origini diverse dal genere che questo gruppo propone. "The Voice"
era semplicemente perfetta, ed i risultati lo hanno dimostrato!!
Ehm.. lo sapevate che anche gli Edguy erano andati a "scomodare"
gli Ultravox, riprendendo la loro "Hymn"?
Veramente no...Nessuno di noi segue gli Edguy.
Allora è difficile presupporre che il vostro prossimo
album vedrà una decisa sterzata verso il power metal più "happy"?
Non credo, molte "ingenuità" che ci siamo portati dietro dal
nostro primo Demo CD sono destinate a sparire (almeno speriamo!). E' chiaro
che non cambieremo del tutto genere, penso che il prossimo album sarà
una naturale evoluzione del primo. Siamo cresciuti tecnicamente ed abbiamo raggiunto
un'ottima intesa a livello compositivo, sarà un disco più...maturo
e complesso, diciamo così.
Al di là delle diverse influenze, è evidente
come il vostro sound sia legato a doppio nodo al metal degli anni '80 pensate
che oltre ai soliti nostalgici possa fare presa su un più vasto settore
di metallari?
A giudicare dalle prime reazioni, crediamo di si. "Souls Thieves"
non è un disco che vuole emulare il Metal anni '80. Come ho già
detto prima, gli stili che lo caratterizzano sono molteplici, anche perché
ciascuno di noi partecipa attivamente in fase compositiva. Fabio M. ama i Dream
Theater, io adoro gli Angra ed i vecchi Helloween, Napo è il più
"Maideniano" di noi, Fabio S. è il più "new age"
anche se adora i Blind Guardian ed infine Sandro è un accanito fan di
Billy Sheehan e del prog metal in genere. E comunque ci tengo a specificare
che non abbiamo mai composto songs con lo scopo di farle piacere a questo o
a quello, noi componiamo e basta. Poi, si vedrà....
Tra i brani inclusi su "Souls Thieves" ci sono
solo pezzi rodati negli anni oppure ne avete composto qualcuno appositamente
per l'occasione?
Tutti i brani sono abbastanza rodati, con tutto il tempo che abbiamo impiegato
per trovare un accordo con una Label non c'è da stupirsi! Ma almeno questo
ci ha permesso di perfezionarli al meglio ed esserne soddisfatti al 100%. Non
c'è niente di peggio che risentire un proprio brano e dire "però...questo
stacco non mi piace...quest'assolo fa schifo..." e non avere più
il tempo di cambiarlo!
Avete altre canzoni che aspettano di finire sul prossimo
disco o magari siete già al lavoro su nuove composizioni?
Abbiamo riarrangiato un brano del primo Demo perché è una canzone
valida, le altre sono completamente nuove. Al momento abbiamo pronti 7 nuovi
brani, più molte altre idee che stiamo sviluppando...
Che ne dici di darci qualche anticipazione?
I brani sono tutti diversi fra loro, alcuni sono un po' più articolati,
altri più "lineari", in ogni caso cercheremo di mantenere invariato
il nostro stile, migliorando la tecnica.
Ti posso anticipare che ci sarà una ballad e che per il momento non abbiamo
intenzione di preparare altre cover (salvo esplicita richiesta da parte della
Label). Forse avremo anche occasione di suonare qualcosa di nuovo dal vivo...Vedremo.
Quando ci sarà la possibilità di vedervi
dal vivo?
Suoneremo il 15 Gennaio al Qube di Roma, ma sarà un tributo agli Iron
Maiden.
Per sentire i brani presenti su Souls Thieves bisognerà aspettare il
1° Febbraio al Coetus Pub di Roma, il 3 Aprile al Transilvania di Civitanova
Marche ed il 15 Aprile ancora al Qube. Siamo comunque alla ricerca di serate

Siamo molto soddisfatti di come questo Album sia stato accolto dalla critica
italiana ed internazionale (almeno fino ad oggi). La qualità di registrazione
è ottima (The Outer Sound Studios docet) , i brani sono validi, e , cosa
più importante, piacciono a noi! Speriamo solo di continuare a divertirci
ridando nuova linfa ad un genere che sta scomparendo, sepolto dal Death, Gothic
e Nu Metal.

01.Scontatissima
ma indispensabile la prima: la vostra storia please??????
Tutti : Siamo nati alla fine del 1996 come cover band degli Iron Maiden ma,
dopo circa 2 anni di attività live, abbiamo cominciato a scrivere pezzi
nostri. Così, in breve tempo, ciò che in principio era nato come
un progetto avente come unico scopo quello di divertirsi emulando i miti di
gioventù, si è trasformato in una bellissima sfida con noi stessi
e, soprattutto, con il pubblico. In quel periodo c'e' stato il primo cambiamento
nella line-up con l'uscita di Sergio e l'arrivo del nostro attuale bassista
Alessandro. Dopo varie disavventure con produttori beffardi e case discografiche
"fantasma" finalmente nel 2003 firmiamo l'accordo con la Steelborn
Records che ci ha portato alla registrazione del nostro debut CD, Souls Thieves.
02.Nel
vostro sound convivono classic heavy,power metal e influenze Irons,quello che
stupisce sono gli imput progressivi che affiorano ad esempio nella splendida
“A Descend into the Maelstrom” e nell’altrettanto bella “Freeze
on the Line”…
Dr.K : Beh, diciamo che questa unione di stili è dovuta al fatto che
ciascuno di tutti, in fase di composizione, da un contributo notevole al songwriting
e se pensi che soltanto io ho influenze che vanno dai Rush ai Supertramp, il
resto viene da se!
Napo : Le influenze sono svariate, ma personalmente posso solo rendere noto
che la prima stesura di "A descent into the Maelstrom" risale al 1986,
periodo in cui il prog aveva "forse" cominciato a fare capolino nell'ambiente
metal....
03.Altrettanto
strana è la comunque bellissima cover degli Ultravox “The Voice”…
Dr. K : E’ una delle più belle canzoni di una band che ho sempre
amato, gli Ultravox, appunto. Ho sempre pensato che se un gruppo deve presentare
una cover in un album da studio, lo deve fare con un brano non troppo conosciuto
e che abbia origini diverse dal genere che questo gruppo propone. The Voice
è semplicemente perfetta, ed il risultato è evidente!
04.Nello
stesso tempo però una track quale”Souls Thief”,pur caratterizzata
da un forte richiamo al sound degli Irons, presuppone da parte vostra la conoscenza
di gruppi quali Armored Saint,Warrior e soprattutto dei misconosciuti Chateaux
siete d’accordo?
Fabio : In tutta sincerità trovo ci sia molta piu' "farina del nostro
sacco" di quanto si possa credere, anche se le influenze di alcuni mostri
sacri della musica non possono mancare, credo sia piu' veritiero mensionare
Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Helloween,
Angra ecc ecc, rispetto ai gruppi che hai citato tu, dei quali, per quel che
mi riguarda, non conosco molto.
05.Un
quadro così composito di influenze,non vi complica il comporre?
Dr.K : No, anzi, ci permette di rendere i nostri brani molto diversi fra loro.
Si potrà dire di tutto su “Souls Thieves”, tranne che sia
un Album monotono!
Napo : In questo modo siamo riusciti a creare un prodotto che, a nostro avviso,
e' fruibile da una vasta schiera di persone, anche se non solite ad ascoltare
Heavy Metal.
06.Scusate
ragazzi ma,ultimamente i migliori gruppi emergenti provengono da Roma (vedi
Concept e Kaledon) e più in generale dagli stati sudisti del regno italico
e davvero non mi spiego questo piccolo mistero..volete farlo voi?
Dr. K : E chi lo sa? Forse merito del clima, della pizza, delle belle donne...Scherzi
a parte, credo sia solo una coincidenza. La verità è che finalmente
gruppi Metal provenienti da tutta Italia si stanno facendo strada alla grande
nel panorama mondiale...Era ora!
Fabio : Sicuramente è un caso, visto che ad essere sinceri, la nostra città non offre nemmeno molti spazi per suonare Metal.
07.Parlatemi
dei testi e ovviamente è d’obbligo pure una minuziosa “track
by track”.
Dr. K / Fabio : Souls Thief parla di un demone che ti ruba l’anima se
lo guardi negli occhi. Al di là dell' interpretazione letterale, questo
testo va visto più in chiave realistico/moderna in un mondo dove troppe
persone hanno smesso di pensare con la propria testa, lasciando che siano altri
a decidere per loro; si tende sempre di piu' ad adeguarsi agli altri, piuttosto
che ad esprimere la propria individualità.
Memories è una riflessione sull’importanza dei ricordi nella vita
di una persona; It è una critica al sopravvento che la tecnologia sta
prendendo sulla fantasia dell’uomo; Once Again è uno sfogo contro

08.Scusatemi
la franchezza e tornando alla musica trovo “It” e “Once Again”
nettamente inferiori al resto del lavoro, troppo scontate a mio giudizio,cosa
mi dite al riguardo?
Dr. K : Di sicuro sono i 2 brani più “semplici” ed orecchiabili,
ma non per questo da buttar via! Anzi, molte persone li hanno apprezzati proprio
per queste caratteristiche!
Fabio : Beh per fortuna il mondo è bello perchè vario e ciò
che puo' non piacere a qualcuno puo' piacere a qualcun altro. Ed è proprio
cio' ci succede spesso con It e Once Again: c'è chi ne esalta la semplicità
e la potenza, chi invece le ha trovate troppo "scontate", ma come
si dice, de gustibus....
09.Al
contrario mi piace assai “Fight against the Dragon”,possente coacervo
fra heavy/epic,
power speed e melodie alla Tygers of Pan Tang. Non vi sembra di esagerare?
Dr. K : Fight...è stata scritta nel ’99 ed inserita nel nostro
primissimo Demo, ma da allora ha subito notevoli cambiamenti, fino a diventare
la classica “suite” da 8 minuti piena di stacchi e cambi di tempo.
Più che dei Tigers...ci trovo influenze dei Blind Guardian, Helloween
ed Iron Maiden.
10.Come
pensate di supportare l’uscita del cd,vista la cronica mancanza di spazi
idonei ai concerti metal,o quantomeno vista la totale assenza di volontà
nel far suonare gruppi heavy?
Dr. K : Prima di tutto sono le recensioni sulle riviste specializzate a dare
la prima “spinta” ad un prodotto, devo dire che sotto questo punto
di vista non ci possiamo lamentare perchè stiamo ricevendo delle ottime

Metal fans know Italy as the primary source of today’s symphonic sounds
laced with stratospheric accented vocals, but if The Prowlers get their due,
the perception may soon change. Forsaking the aforementioned styles, the band
and their 4-song demo “A Descent Into The Maelstrom” (2001) whipped
up a tremendously tasty cocktail of 80’s infectious elegance, modern power
preciseness, and teasings of speed and progressive. 25 minutes of music that
so instantly impressed me, I set right out to learn more. After less than a
handful of eye-blink reviews, I eventually found their site, nosed around, signed
the guestbook, and then split. Unexpectedly, I received a quick response to
my comments and soon both sides were eager to do this interview. With virtually
nothing out there about them and potentially status-altering happenings in their
camp at this very moment, the timing couldn’t be much better. I admit
that after all these years; I still get really amped when getting in early on
great bands, so I hope all of you enjoy this conversation with drummer Claudio
and guitarist Stefano as much as I did.
Joe Metal: Guys, much thanks for taking the time to do
this.
Claudio and Stefano: Hi Dave and hello to Joe Metal readers!
JM: I was pretty surprised at what little was out there
about The Prowlers, especially with the excellence your demo exhibited. Could
you give us some back history to bring us up to date?
Claudio and Stefano: First of all, I hope you’ll excuse us if our English
is not perfect! Let’s talk a little bit about The Prowlers line-up and
history-

The band was born at the end of 1996 as an Iron Maiden tribute band and after
2 years of live activity, we started to write original songs. You will obviously
still find some Maiden influences in our music (To be honest- In which of today’s
heavy metal bands wont you), but our musical background is much wider (from
Genesis to Dream Theater to The Police and Helloween) and all of us an active
part in songwriting. That’s why our songs are full of riffs and tempo
changes!
In Dec. 2000 we recorded the “A Descent Into The Maelstrom” demo
and sent it to specialized press, webzines and labels all over the world. The
response over the following 2 years was more than positive and we received different
recording contract proposals, but only a few months ago we made an agreement
with an Italian label called Northwind Records for the release of our debut
album! Mixing sessions will finish at April’s end, but you won’t
find the CD in shops before September 2003. It will include the 4 songs from
“A Descent….” Re-arranged/performed, plus 5 new songs for
about 1 hour of music! (Mp3’s available at the band’s site)
JM: I think you just gave me more info than you have on
your own site! Let’s go a bit more into the Maiden aspect of things. I’d
have to agree that just about everybody playing metal today has taken something
from the band, but I think you have a much more rounded sound than you (and
the few reviews I read) are willing to give yourselves. What I enjoyed so much
about the demo was that it pulled from so many places and made them your own,
leaving it hard to specifically name 1 band as a predominant influence. You
are a long ways from the tribute days! Speaking of which, it’s much safer
to cover material and play local than write your own songs and travel. What
made the band decide to make the move?
Claudio: One of the reasons for this change in direction came from something
that a kid told us after a gig in Rome; he made us reflect on playing covers
or originals. He said- “Tonight it’s full of people and everybody
enjoyed the show, but when they clapped their hands, 80% of the applause went
to Iron Maiden!” This of course is not the only reason (maybe Stefano
remembers better than me), but it is surely one GOOD reason! I think that the
only way to grow-up as a musician is to accept the challenge and face the opinion
of the audience. Always be proud of what you propose.
Stefano: We had thought about it from the beginning, but as you said, playing
covers is the easiest way to get word around and let your name go from mouth-to-mouth.
However, doing only covers (of a specific band) can get a bit boring, so maybe
it is better to receive greetings from 10 persons about your own music than
from a 1000 about cover songs!
JM: It’s been over 2 years since “…Descent…”;
how has your sound changed/evolved?
Claudio: The first thing you will notice when listening to our new album is
the addition of more keyboards. Until now they have been used to make some atmospheric
backgrounds with strings and choirs, usually played in the studio by our singer
and live by a friend of ours who may definitively join the band for the next
album. At present we are working at new songs (4 are completed) and I can tell
you that our “style” is still the same (pure heavy metal riffs and
aggressive vocals), but with a little bit more technical stuff like mid-tempos
and fast guitars crossing scales!
Stefano: Well, our songwriting has changed moreover since Alessandro, the bass
guitar player, joined us in October of 2000. When we recorded “A Descent…”
he had just arrived and the songs were already written(for the forthcoming album),
but now he’s working a lot with us and bringing a good “wind of
changes” to The prowlers songwriting!
JM: Now that we’re pretty much up to date and though
you did touch on it a bit earlier, let’s get to what I’d guess would
be what you’d like to talk about most- Your signing to Northwind/Steelborn
records (home to Desdemona and Kaledon among others). How did it come about
and what are the improvements you see from being signed?
Claudio: Northwind Records contacted us after we sent them our last demo CD
(“Soul Theives”), but we had already signed with a German label.
After one year of troubles, we decided to break with them. We contacted Northwind
and asked if they were still interesyed in us………….The
answer was YES! Of course being signed means we now have more possibilities
to spread our music as far as possible; this will give us more enthusiasm to
write new songs and a meaning to all our efforts!
Stefano: Well………., it came after 2 years of hard work, sending
our “A Descent…” demo cd all around the world, getting really
good reviews from papers and webzines and some recording contacts. Then, after
one bad experience with a “non-serious” label that stopped us for
1 year by making only promises, Mauro from Northwind/Steelborn offered us a
good contract. The improvements I see is that now we have someone that believes
in us and can promote the band surely better than we can do with our own forces;
they are more professional in doing such things so now we can concentrate on
playin’ our music and writing new songs!
JM: With Italy known the “Symphonic” metal
capital, what kinds of positive and/or negative effects might it have on a much
“purer” band like yours?
Claudio: We are glad that finally, Italian bands are coming out and we hope
that Symphonic will only the beginning. There are many good power metal (Labyrinth)
and progressive (DGM) bands that deserve the same success of Rhapsody and company.
For what is of concern to us, we just play the music that we like most at this
moment and we try to do it at our best without thinking about the effects!
Stefano: Well, it may have, as most things, both positive and negative effects………Being
so different from the standard may be great if people talk to each other and
our difference becomes popular. On the other hand, people may be scared of buyin’
something that comes from a land where everyone plays “Symphonic Metal”,
but we know that our label will do a lot to let the people know that Italy is
not only this!
JM: How about a little personal info on you guys- What
are your hobbies outside the band and what are some current books, bands, and
movies that have grabbed your interest? Longtime faves would be cool too!
Claudio: Well, you probably know that Italians have 3 great passions- Women,
soccer, and food! During my free time I like to play soccer or go to the stadium
to see my favorite team (A.S. Roma) play. I love the cinema; I would like to
go there every day! There are too many movies that I love; to list them would
take too long! During weekend evenings, I like to walk around the center of
Rome with a friend (especially a girl), eat a pizza, and take a look at this
wonderful town! During summer I spend a lot of time at the beach! My favorite
bands are Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Rush, Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), Dream
Theater and many others. Recently, I’ve been impressed by Sonata Arctica,
Angra, our Friends DGM, and Linkin Park. I like Asimov and fantasy books, even
if I unfortunately don’t have much time to spend reading.
Stefano: At the moment I’m spending a lot of time playing with my Nintendo
Gamecube….I find it a good way to relax! Once a week I like to watch football
matches on TV, even if the season was not so good for my favorite team (A.S.
Roma). Talking about books, I can tell you that I’m not a “book
eater”, but I like reading Lovecraft and Tolkien above all. A young Italian
writer that’s grabbed my mind is Niccolo Ammaniti. The bands I like the
most are Iron Maiden (like most everyone), Stratovarius, Rammstein, and many
others………But the one that no one can beat is THE BEATLES!
The Great Lebowsky is one of my favorite movies as well as The Lord Of The Rings,
and The Matrix and many others………..
JM: One refreshing thing I've noticed about you guys is
that unlike a lot of bands today you aren't afraid to look like you're having
fun/in a good mood in front of the camera; especially the live shots. So then,
is your "image" important to you, and, is playing live as much of
a blast as it appears?
Claudio: I’ve always thought that the important thing for a band was the
quality of music, independent of their external aspect. During the last few
years I’ve had to change my mind about this; we are living in a world
where the importance given to the “look” of artists is in constant
growth. Our society is more and more “image-based”- Television,
the internet, new MMS and UMTS technologies are clear examples of this, so we
just try to “keep up with the times” by taking a little care of
our image. For concerns about playing live, this is the most important moment
for a rock band…The contact with fans! A mutual exchange of energy and
adrenaline, a feeling that no drug in the world can give! Fantastic…
Stefano: As you can notice from the new pictures at our website and the ones
that will be uploaded as soon as possible, we’ve started to give a bit
more weight to our look, but just because we like to "refresh" our
site with some new pictures that show the changes due to time passing by.
Unfortunately we don't have live dates planned in the USA at the moment. We
enjoy so much playin' live that every gig is like the 1st...Energy, energy,
energy...and obviously tons of FUN!
JM: Now that the record is finished and soon to be released
what will the future bring for the five of you in terms of touring and/or other
musical projects?
Claudio: We’ve readied 4 new songs and are working on others; we will
surely record a new album as soon as possible. About touring, we will promote
the CD in Italy of course, but talking about a European tour now is too early.
We must wait until the album comes out and see the response of the audience.
Stefano: We are already working on new songs for a 2nd CD but we're also improving
the ones from the 1st album for live playing. At the moment we haven’t
thought yet to plan new gigs, but we'll do it as soon as possible to support
the release of our 1st CD!
JM: Thank you once again for giving me the opportunity
to do your first interview; it's been a real pleasure. I'm glad I got in early
because the new CD will no doubt be well received (it better be)! Any final
thoughts?
Claudio: Thanks to you for your incredible support and for the interest you
are showing in our band!! Of course you will be one of the first to receive
our CD and we are looking forward to your first impressions and comments. We
hope to soon find a little space in the heart of many American kids! Ciao!

You started out as an (Iron Maiden) cover band right? So did you think of changing
your name when you started to compose your own material?
- When in 1996 we started to play as a tribute band, we didn’t have any
idea about the future of The Prowlers, we only wanted to have fun.
Then, little by little, things took a more “serious” direction.
4 years later, when we recorded our first Demo CD, we discussed a little about
the Band’s name, at the end we decided not to change it for a few reasons:
1. It is not so easy to find a new band’s name! ;-) We tried, but we couldn’t
find something that satisfied of us at 100%
2. We were known as tribute band only in Italy, while we’d like to propose
our songs to a widest audience.
3. If the name of a Band is used to identify a group of persons, and elements
of this group don’t change radically, why the name of the band should
change only because they play a different kind of music?

Tell us a little bit about the history about The Prowlers once you were off
writing your own songs.
- As I said before, we started playing Covers only for fun, the evolution to
original song writing has been gradual and we didn’t decide it from one
day to another.
The first song has been “Souls Thief”, written by our singer Fabio.
Then “It”, written by me, “Once Again” by the guitarist
Fabio and so on…
We released our first 5 tracks Demo CD in 1999, but it was totally homemade
and recording quality wasn’t so good. So we decided to record a new one
into Professional Studios. So, during December 2000, we released “A descent
into the Maelstrom”, a 4 tracks CD that gave lots of satisfactions during
next 1.5 years!
In 2002 we recorded another Demo CD, titled “Souls Thieves”, thanks
to this we almost reached a deal with the German Labels LMP Records and Shark
Records, but at the end, nothing happened.
Few months later we’ve been contacted by the Italian Label “Northwind
Records”, signed a contract and released our Debut Album during October
2003.

The album was released in October 2003 already, so why this late promo campaign
in Europe?
The reason is that promotion started after the release of the Album, so, considering
expedition times and the big number of releases that every month fill mailboxes
of Webzines and Magazines, it’s natural that the CD has been reviewed
2 or 3 months after the shipment to shops.
Anyway, it’s been a choice of our Label Manager.

I can hear the Maiden influences on the album, but where did you get your roots
when it comes to the progressive side of the album?
Yeah! Everyone found immediately Iron Maiden influences in our music, but, as
you said, we are not (and we don’t want to be) Iron Maiden clones!!!
The prog site comes from bands like Dream Theater and Fates Warning.

What are your main influences and personal favourite bands?
As I said in the previous answer, several bands influence our song writing.
I am an estimator of Angra, Helloween, Dream Theater and Queensryche, but I
don’t disdain bands like Police, Supertramp, Jamiroquai and Massive Attack!!!
Napo is the most Iron Maiden-oriented of us, The Eldar started playing guitar
in a new age band but he loves Blind Guardian, Fabio (singer) likes Dream Theater,
Angra and Metallica. Sandro (bass) is a fan of Billy Sheean and likes prog metal
in general.
- How is the Italian metal scene and your position in
that scene?
Unfortunately, Italy cannot be considered a country where Heavy Metal is very
popular.
It’s difficult listen to Metal Songs at the Radio or to find a place where
play this kind of music.
Anyway, there are some Italian Metal Bands quite famous all around the world
like Rhapsody, Lacuna Coil, Novembre and Ephel Duath.
In Italy we are still considered an underground band, but we are starting to
gain some popularity in the USA and Northern Europe.
We only must wait a little more time to see the effects that “Souls Thieves”
will have on the audience, but our expectations are good…
- Do you think it is a disadvantage to be from Italy,
knowing that Italy has not a huge name when it come to metal? In other words
would it be easier if you were from Finland for instance?
Concerning the quality of music proposed by Italian Bands, maybe this was true
until few years ago, fortunately now things are changing and there are many
Bands from our country that have nothing to envy to German or Finnish bands.
The main problem for a band coming from centre/south of Italy is the distance
from countries where Heavy Metal is more appreciated. In example, we cannot
take the car and go to play a gig in a German City only for a weekend!

Is the album going to be released in the U.S. and Japan as well?
Yes, the Album has been distributed in the USA and Japan. I saw it for sale
also in Russian and South Korean Websites. But now is too early to know how
it’s going and we are still waiting to read the reviews on Metal Magazines
from those countries.
- I think on “Souls Thieves” you serve a lot
of metal fans. It can be very interesting for melodic fans but also for people
who love the heavy things and progressive as well, what do you think of that
comment?
Exactly! You know, we are that kind of people. We like melodic and progressive
metal and we tried to mix those two kinds of music in the most natural way that
we could. But, the most important thing is that we play what WE like! It’s
a pleasant surprise to know that there are still lots of people who like this
kind of music and a honour to share it with them!

How do you write songs normally, all together or in groups? Tell us about that
process.
Usually the main theme of a song comes from one of us. The new “idea”
is explained to Guitar and Bass players while I try to find the right solution
for Drums.
During the development of the instrumental part, the singer tries to understand
where voices can be placed and looks for a melody that fits to music and then
we write lyrics.
But, in some cases, the process is exactly the opposite and we start from lyrics…
- Do you have a personal favourite on the album and why
that song?
My favourite song is “A Descent into the Maelstrom” because it is
a perfect mix between Heavy/Power and Prog Metal. The music was written by Napo
in the 80es (I think around 1989!!), the melody of the voice by our singer and
the lyrics by me (inspired to a novel written by Edgar Allan Poe).
But I like also “Incubus” and “Memories”.
- What do you guys do in ‘normal’ life; I
suppose you have some day jobs?
Fortunately yes, all of us have a day job allowing to survive and to finance
this great passion that we share! As many of you surely know, music is rather
expensive until a Band is still an underground phenomena!!
But we often ask to ourselves the biggest question: what if we should leave
our jobs for a 2 months tour? We look to each other, laugh and say that for
the moment this is just a dream! If someday it will come true, we will decide...
- Are there any plans for touring Europe? I think it is
absolutely necessary for a new band to promote an album by touring.
As I told you before, the distance from Centre Europe doesn’t help us
on this matter. We are playing concerts in Italy, now, but we don’t have
any date abroad, and this is a real pity!! We’d need a good Live Promoter
or a Big Label to organise some shows around Europe or to participate to some
Big Festival…We only have to be patient…

What about the next album, are you already working on that?
Yeah! We have 7 new songs now, but we want to write at least more 3 to record
a new 10 Tracks Demo and send it to Labels.
The style will be, more or less, the same, but with an improvement in our skill
as musicians and in songs arrangements. There will be a little more space for
keyboards since a 6th element joined us few months ago. We think that the new
songs sound really great!!!
- The only thing I think needs some major improvement
is your website I am sorry to say, do you agree or are you guys completely satisfied
with the site?
The present website has been created by Napo and me in 1998!!
But your question comes in the right moment ‘cause a completely restyled
website will be online at the beginning/half of March ’04.
We will advise you to know your opinion about it, of course!!

Grazie! E’ stata una bella faticata, ma i primi risultati si cominciano a vedere! Speriamo sia solo l’inizio...
Voi Nascete come tribute degli Iron Maiden avete del tutto abbandonato questo tipo di attività oppure pensate di proseguire malgrado il buon disco da voi realizzato?
L’idea sarebbe quella di abbandonare del tutto l’attività di cover band, ma finchè non avremo abbastanza brani nostri da proporre durante una serata, dovremo “riempire” con le cover degli Irons. Non possiamo fare concerti da un’ora! Quando realizzeremo il secondo Album (speriamo presto) le cose saranno diverse...
Classica domanda che si fa ad un gruppo fresco di stampa,siete soddisfatti del lavoro oppure c’è qualcosa che avreste cambiato all’ultimo momento?
Siamo più che soddisfatti! Il CD ha un impatto sonoro impressionante, niente da invidiare ai dischi realizzati per le majors. E poi ormai gli Outer Sound Studios di Giuseppe Orlando sono una garanzia!
Come mai avete chiamato il vostro album “Soul Thieves” vi sentite per caso dei ladri di anime?
Beh,
speriamo di diventarlo con questo Album, rubando l’anima a molti nuovi
fans!Hehehe!
In realtà il titolo dell’album richiama quello della prima song,
“Souls Thief”, appunto, che parla di un demone che ti ruba l’anima
se lo guardi negli occhi...Deliri del nostro cantante!
Ho citato tra le vostre influenze gruppi come Iron Maiden (quella più scontata) gli Heavy Load i Manowar e i Virgin Steel è giusto oppure vi sentite di aggiungere qualche altro nome?
Gli Irons hanno avuto un ruolo fondamentale per la nostra cresita artistica e musicale, basti pensare che li seguiamo dai tempi di “Powerslave” (1986, credo), ma le maggiori influenze le cercherei i gruppi più moderni come Helloween, Angra ed un pizzico di prog...
Quale potrebbe essere il filo conduttore del disco ?
Il bello di questo disco è proprio il fatto che non c’è un filo conduttore. Nel senso che i brani sono tutti diversi fra loro, ci sono tracce puramente Power Metal (It e Memories), altre più Heavy (Souls Thief, Once Again), alcune sfiorano il Progressive ( Incubus, A Descent into the Maelstrom) e l’Epic Metal (Fight against the Dragon). Si potrà dire tutto, tranne che questo sia un Album noioso!
Durante le sessions di registrazione è andato tutto bene o ci sono stati degli intoppi?
Come avrai potuto leggere sul Booklet del CD, per motivi di tempo le chitarre ed il basso le abbiamo dovute registrare nella nostra sala prove “Musical Box”. Una volta messe su CD e portate agli Outer Sound ci siamo accorti che alcune chitarre avevano un suono diverso!! Fortunatamente Giuseppe è un mago dell’equalizzazione ed è riuscito a risolvere il problema, risparmiando ai chitarristi una bella crisi isterica!
Siete contenti del lavoro della vostra etichetta?
La Steelborn è stata una manna dal cielo! Dopo svariate “sole” prese da un Produttore italiano e due etichette tedesche, eravamo quasi rassegnati ad un’autoproduzione. Ma grazie a questa etichetta di Tortona abbiamo visto il nostro CD nei negozi nell’arco di pochi mesi!
Voi siete frequentatori assidui dei vari locali che ci sono a Roma com’è la situazione riguardo l’attività concertistica?
E qui tocchiamo un tasto dolente! Le uniche due concrete realtà, a livello organizzativo, con cui abbiamo avuto a che fare a Roma fin’ora, sono Metal Massacre e Radio Rock. C’è da dire che anche all’Alpheus ultimamente stanno organizzando dei concerti interessanti. Quello che i gestori dei locali non riescono a capire è che non è il gruppo che si esibisce a dover portare i propri amici per fare audience, ma deve essere il locale stesso a trovare il modo giusto di attirare le persone!
Ascoltando il vostro CD il brano che più mi ha colpito è “The voice” trovo che sia forse il brano più diverso di tutto il lotto potete descrivere ai nostri lettori l’escursus di questo brano?
E’
una canzone degli Ultravox risalente al 1981 (Album “Rage in Eden”)
e l’unica cover del disco. Ho sempre pensato che si prestasse molto ad
essere “metallizzata” e quando l’ho proposta al resto del
gruppo sono stati subito tutti entusiasti!
Il risultato è stato ottimo!
Sempre durante l’ascolto ho notato che la presenza di alcune voci recitanti a chi appartengono ?
Ehm...Veramente
appartengono a me!
Ho recitato la parte del Cavaliere in “Fight against the dragon”
e del vecchio narratore alla fine di “A Descent...”, poi è
stato sufficiente abbassare la tonalità di un paio di ottave ed il gioco
è fatto! Prodigi della tecnica...Ma è stato molto divertente!
Cosa avete in cantiere attualmente?
Stiamo lavorando su nuovi brani e ci stiamo preparando a dei concerti. Inoltre abbiamo inserito un nuovo elemento alla Tastiere, questo ci permetterà di sfruttare nuove soluzioni a livello di arrangiamenti e di sonorità.
Bene siamo giunti al termine dell’intervista vi ringrazio per la vostra pazienza volete aggiungere qualcosa?

Vorrei incominciare chiedendovi di raccontarmi come sono nati i The Prowlers, come molte band del presente italiano voi avete mosso i primi passi suonando cover degli Iron Maiden, a voi la parola......
Sarò
breve: nel 1980 usciva “Iron Maiden”, un album che avrebbe segnato
irrimediabilmente il nostro modo di concepire la musica...
Scherzi a parte, io (Dr. K) e Napo, da bravi compagni di banco al Liceo e fans
sfegatati della Vegine di Ferro, stanchi di suonare in Gruppetti il cui unico
scopo era quello di trovare il maggior numero di serate trascurando la qualità
dei brani proposti, abbiamo deciso di mettere su una Cover Band a tema.
Nel 1996 non ce n’erano molte, quanto meno degli Irons, ma la cosa non
ci scoraggiò affatto, anzi...
I nostri due amici Fabio S. (Chitarra) e Sergio (che nel 2000 ha lasciato il
posto all’attuale bassista Alessandro) ci hanno seguito a ruota, così
sono nati 4/5 dei The Prowlers.
A questo punto veniva l’impresa più ardua: trovare un cantante
convincente. Non è stata impresa facile e di “pretendenti”
ne abbiamo provati molti, ma alla fine la classica telefonata all’amico
dell’amico dell’altro amico ci ha messo in contatto con Fabio M...Il
fatidico e fondamentale “quinto elemento”!!
La risposta dei Kids di Roma è stata eccezionale! Molti di loro ricordano
ancora la mitica serata (nostra seconda esibizione in assoluto, nel 1997) allo
storico Moon Club!!
Ma è stato proprio Fabio M., nel 1998, a proporre il primo brano originale,
si trattava di Souls Thief.
Abbiamo così cominciato, parallelamente alla sempre divertentissima attività
di Cover Band, a dedicarci alla composizione di musica nostra, fino alla registrazione
“casalinga” del nostro primo Demo CD...
Veniamo al disco, ho notato una verve compositiva indiscutibile capace di fondere il classico sound della New Wave of British Heavy Metal con lo stile del metal dei giorni nostri senza snaturare le caratteristiche della tradizione. Come avete raggiunto questo risultato in fase di song writing?
A
dire il vero è una cosa del tutto “naturale”. Nel senso che
non ci siamo messi a tavolino e deciso quale stile avremmo seguito, ci siamo
semplicemente ripromessi di suonare quello che ci piace di più. Le nostre
influenze vanno dai Maiden agli Helloween, fino ai Dream Theater...
Ma la cosa più importante dei The Prowlers è qualcosa di cui spesso
molti gruppi peccano: una sana e coerente autocritica. Finchè un brano
non viene considerato “presentabile” da tutta la band, ci si lavora
sopra smussandone gli spigoli e ritoccandone i dettagli e se alla fine il risultato
non ci soddisfa al 100%, viene abbandonato del tutto.
Al fianco di composizioni epiche e crescenti siete riusciti a generare atmosfere dinamiche dalle melodie crescenti, una qualità che raramente viene concretizzata fin dal primo disco, ritenete di essere arrivati al vostro trade mark definitivo o ci sono degli aspetti che intendete approfondire nel vostro sound in futuro?
Al
momento stiamo lavorando su nuove canzoni e ti posso anticipare che qualche
leggero ed inevitabile cambiamento ci sarà. Soprattutto perchè
siamo cresciuti tecnicamente, per cui alcuni brani saranno leggermente più
articolati, ma senza esagerare in inutili virtuosismi!
Credo che ciò che caratterizza le grandi Bands è la capacità
di cambiare sound da un Album all’altro, riuscendo a mantenere un proprio
stile ed una propria identità.
Devo dire che sono due, a mio avviso, le vostre armi segrete.
In primo luogo un vocalist davvero carismatico e personale, che richiama il
metal classico senza seguire la scia di nessun maestro particolare. Secondo,
le chitarre soliste usate in modo alternato, un vecchio cavallo di battaglia
della British school, cosa ne pensate?
L’
imprinting che la voce di Fabio ha dato alle nostre canzoni è incredibile,
molti lo accostano a Bruce Dickinson (uno dei suoi punti di riferimento, insieme
a J. La Brie), ma questa è tutt’altro che una critica negativa!
Gli assoli di chitarra alternati hanno caratterizzato non solo il NWOBHM, ma
anche il Power Metal di stampo Teutonico ed a noi piacciono molto!
Avete registrato il disco a Roma con un personaggio notevole in sede di producer, parlo di Giuseppe Orlando dei Novembre, come vi siete trovati alle prese con la registrazione del disco in studio, siete soddisfatti del sound del cd?
Abbiamo incontrato Giuseppe per la prima volta in occasione della registrazione del nostro secondo Demo CD “A Descent into the Maelstrom” nel Dicembre 2000. In 10 giorni abbiamo registrato e mixato 4 brani con un risultato eccezionale, tanto che se li avessimo messo in vendita come Mini CD non avremmo rubato nulla! Durante quel periodo è nata un’intesa ed una simpatia reciproca (almeno speriamo ;-)) al punto che gli Outer Sound Studios sono e resteranno a lungo il nostro punto di riferimento per le registrazioni.
Avete trovato casa presso la Piemontese Steelborn Records, come sono andate le cose con l’etichetta al momento del primo contatto. Siete soddisfatti di quanto stanno facendo a Tortona per i The Prowlers a livello di distribuzione e promozione del vostro primo cd?
La
Steelborn aveva mostrato un certo interesse nei nostri confronti già
2 anni fa, quando gli inviammo una copia di “A Descent...”. Ma la
cosa non si concretizzò. In seguito fummo contattati dalle Tedesche “Limb”
e “Shark Records” che dopo un anno di tira e molla si sono rivelate
una bufala. Ma dato che perseverare è diabolico, soprattutto quando si
crede profondamente in ciò che si propone, abbiamo ricontattato Mauro
“Steelborn” per sapere se era ancora interessato a lavorare con
noi. Ed eccoci qua, nell’arco di pochi mesi abbiamo visto il nostro Debut
Album nei negozi!!
Per quanto riguarda la distribuzione e la promozione è ancora presto
per trarre delle conclusioni, vedremo fra qualche mese...
Vorrei sapere se avete in programma delle date live per supportare l’uscita del disco, più in generale credo che l’aspetto live sia fondamentale per l’ensamble della vostra band. Vi piace suonare dal vivo? Possiamo considerarei The Prowlers un live band appassionata?

Band è nata per suonare dal vivo, ed è una cosa che non smetteremo
mai di cercare!
Al momento abbiamo poche date in programma, probabilmente ci affideremo ad un’agenzia
di promozioni live per muoverci più efficacemente!
Cosa mi dite dei testi delle canzoni, vorrei sapere se ci sono delle tematiche portanti all’interno del cd oppure se ci sono degli aneddoti particolari da sottoporre all’attenzione dei nostri lettori, potete mettere in luce qualcuno di questi aspetti?
Ti
posso fare una rapida “track by track”:
Souls Thief parla di un demone che ti ruba l’anima se lo guardi negli
occhi. Al di là dell' interprtazione letterale, questo testo va visto
più in chiave realistico/moderna in un mondo dove troppe persone hanno
smesso di pensare con la propria testa, lasciando che siano altri a decidere
per loro; si tende sempre di piu' ad adeguarsi agli altri, piuttosto che ad
esprimere la propria individualità.
Memories è una riflessione sull’importanza dei ricordi nella vita
di una persona; It è una critica al sopravvento che la tecnologia sta
prendendo sulla fantasia dell’uomo; Once Again è uno sfogo contro
la falsità e le menzogne; Fight against...E’ la storia di un cavaliere
che, come hanno già tentato di fare i suoi avi, deve sconfiggere un drago
che ogni 100 anni attacca il suo villaggio.Un' invocazione al tentativo di superare
i propri limiti ed a credere fino in fondo in ciò che si fa. Incubus
è il delirio di una mente malata; The Voice bisogna chiederlo agli Ultravox;
Freeze... testo nato in un momento in cui la "chiamata alle armi"
ha tolto un anno di vita a Fabio; A Descent... è tratta da un racconto
di E.A. Poe e narra di una barca di pescatori che s’imbatte nel pericoloso
gorgo che si forma a largo dei mari norvegesi.
Immagino che siate già impegnati sui vostri progetti futuri, quali novità attendono i prossimi frangenti dei The Prowlers? State lavorando sui nuovi pezzi o cosa altro potete dirmi sui vostri passi futuri?
Al
momento abbiamo 6 nuovi brani quasi completati ed altri 4 in cantiere. Inoltre
abbiamo inserito un tastierista (Massimiliano) e presto ne daremo l’annuncio
ufficiale. E’ un ottimo musicista e ci permetterà di usufruire
di nuove soluzioni come intro di pianoforte ed atmosfere prog, oltre ad avere
una testa in più per gli arrangiamenti.
Avremmo anche una mezza idea di girare un video...Ma vogliamo prima vedere come
andranno le vendite del CD.
Quanto ha influito l’essere una cover band dei Maiden
nella vostra crescita artistica, vi ritenete molto influenzati da Harris &
Co. oppure l’attuale direzione del vostro gruppo sia totalmente indipendente
dal vostro passato? Vi è piaciuto l’ultimo cd degli Iron Maiden?
In
effetti 7 anni fa le nostre capacità tecniche erano al disotto di quelle
attuali, e cercare di “duplicare” i brani dei Maiden è stato
lo stimolo giusto per crescere. E’ ovvio che un minimo di influenza resterà
sempre, ma quale delle bands attualmente in circolazione non ha subito influenze
di qualunque tipo?
L’ultimo Album dei Maiden è un buon disco, forse i brani sono troppi,
ma si sente che sono suonati col cuore e non soltanto per fare soldi.

First of all, Claudio (“Dr. K”), I would like to congratulate you, and the rest of the band for your album! What is the response of the media and the fans so far?
C: Thanks!! The response of the media has been more than positive! We received great Reviews from all around the world (see the dedicated section in our Web Site), but I have to say that the best of them came from USA! Also the fans who bought the “Souls Thieves” album sent us lots of E-mails, congratulating for the great job that we have done! We are very glad of all this, it gives us the strength to go on!
Can you tell us a few words about the band’s history?
C: We started playing Covers only for fun, the evolution to original song writing has been gradual and we didn’t decide it from one day to another. We released our first 5 tracks Demo CD in 1999, but it was totally homemade and the recording quality wasn’t so good. So, we decided to record a new one into Professional Studios. So, during December 2000, we released “A descent into the Maelstrom”, a 4 tracks CD that gave lots of satisfactions during next 1.5 years! In 2002 we recorded another Demo CD, titled “Souls Thieves”, thanks to this we almost reached a deal with the German Labels LMP Records and Shark Records, but at the end, nothing happened. Few months later we’ve been contacted by the Italian Label “Northwind Records”, signed a contract and released our Debut Album during October 2003.
What are your influences as a band and what are your personal favourite groups?
C:
Well, several bands influenced our song writing. I am an estimator of Angra,
Helloween, Dream Theater and Queensryche, but I don’t disdain bands like Police,
Supertramp, Jamiroquai and Massive Attack!!!
Napo is the most Iron Maiden-oriented of us, The Eldar started playing guitar in
a new age band but he loves Blind Guardian, Fabio (singer) likes Dream Theater,
Angra and Metallica. Sandro (Bass) is a fan of Billy Sheean and likes prog metal
in general.
Why did you name the album “Souls Thieves” and do you believe that such thieves really exist?
C: The Album’s title is tied to the 2nd track name that is Souls Thief; it talks about a Demon who steels your soul if you look it in the eyes… The lyrics have been written by our singer Fabio, and I think that it’s just a story coming from his fantasy!
Now I would like you to tell me a line or two for each song.
C: Ok…It will take a little…but I can do it! ;-)
Track 1 is just an Intro and I already talked about Souls Thief before, so let’s start from track 3.
“Memories” talks about how the experiences done in life can influence our decisions, in the good and the bad way.
“It” is a criticism to how computers are taking the place of the real life.
“Once again” is a song against liars and false people.
“Fight Against The Dragon” talks about a knight who has to kill a dragon that every 100 years wakes up and attacks his village.
“Incubus” is just the description of a psychopathic mind.
“The Voice” is an old song by Ultravox, re-played and re-arranged by us, but I don’t really know what is talking about…
“Freeze On The Line” talks about life of soldiers during their trainings
“A Descent Into The Maelstrom”
comes from an Edgar Allan Poe novel and is about a ship of sailormen that fall
is the middle of an enormous whirlpool.
Which songs do you consider as the best of the album and why?
C:
My favorite songs are “A Descent…” and “Incubus” because they are a perfect mix
between Heavy and Prog Metal. Also lyrics are not bad…
Now I want you to tell me about the collection that Man In Black Records released last year and included your track “Incubus”. Do you think that this helped your career and how?
C: Man in Black Music contacted us after that they heard “Incubus” in a French Compilation CD, they asked us to include it in their new project and we agreed. I think that participating to some compilations, always helps the bands to extend their fame, of course it depends on how these compilations are distributed and promoted, at MIB Music they’ve done a great job!!
What are the group’s plans for the near future and what are you doing this period?
C: At the moment we are playing few live gigs in Italy and writing new songs, as soon as we’ll have 10 of them, we’ll record a Demo and send it to Labels. We have also a new website and we are introducing in the band a new element, Max plays keyboards and soon will be part of The Prowlers!
Are you satisfied with your label or are you looking for a bigger one?
C: I think every band would like to sign a contract with a major label, but it’s very difficult, especially for the debut album. We are happy that Steelborn Records gave us the chance to start, but it’s natural to look for something bigger for our next release.
What would you say to someone who hasn’t listened to your CD or any track from your group in order to convince him to listen to the new CD?
C: This is a good question! I think I would tie him to a chair, put headphones on his head and press play on the stereo at full volume!!! ;-)
What do you think of today’s metal scene in Italy? Can you tell us a few underground groups that have impressed you? (if you have listened to any underground groups).
C:
Unfortunately, Italy cannot be considered a country where Heavy Metal is very
popular. It’s difficult listen to Metal Songs at the Radio or find a place where
you can listen to this kind of music. Anyway, there are some Italian Metal Bands
quite famous all around the world like Rhapsody, Lacuna Coil, Novembre and Ephel
Duath.
In Italy we are still considered an underground band, but we are starting to
gain some popularity in the USA and Northern Europe. We must only wait a little
more time to see the effects that “Souls Thieves” will have on the audience, but
our expectations are good…
I think that a new band can hardly find a contract with a big label the last years. What do you think of this, although that you are not a new band since you exist for almost 8 years?
C: The problem is that nowadays is too easy to record a CD, so the market is overloaded even if the quality of recordings and of song writing is not always good, and this goes against valid bands. Without talking about the Internet problem, this goes against ALL new bands, because the famous ones are already rich enough!!!
What are your favourite drummers?
C: My favourite drummer has always been Neil Peart from Rush, but I like also Mike Portnoy and Terry Bozzio.
And now just a couple of “weird questions”… Imagine that your wife is selling your whole album-collection just to buy for her an expensive, good ring. How would you react?
C: Hihihi!! This is nice!! Let’s say that I solved this problem at his root because I’m not married, so I’m not risking such a tragedy!!! ;-))
If you were living in Middle Earth (I hope that you have seen or read the “Lord Of The Rings”) which character would you choose to be and why.
C: I read the Tolkien trilogy maybe 15 years ago, and I think that the movies are great!!! I’d like to be an Elf, because of their wisdom, calm… and nice girls!! ;-)

I love Greece and I’ve been there few times, you have a great history and

1. There are lots of melodic power and heavy metal bands coming from Italy. When you began to play, have you had some good idea, how to break through and make people listen to your music?
Dr. K+ Napo: Well, really not. We started as an Iron Maiden tribute band in 1996 and our original songs came out naturally after a couple of years. We didn’t plan anything…It was just a natural evolution, like many bands before us.
2. Let me guess, the band’s name is inspired by Maiden track? If I’m wrong what is the idea behind it?
Dr. K + Napo: You’re right and the reason for this name can be understood reading what’s written some lines above! ;-)
3. Your album “Souls Thieves” includes many track from you early demos. I think, that these songs are completely newly recorded, right?
Dr. K + Napo: Completely re-recorded and re-arranged! During last years our style evolved and our skill as musicians too. Moreover recordings quality wasn’t (the first Demo is totally “home-made”) so we decided to join a professional Studio to release a CD having the best sound performance.
4. The first demo title was inspired by Poe’s novel. And what about are the other stories you tell in your lyrics?
Dr. K + Napo: Well…They are extremely various: from fairy tales as Knight facing a Dragon to a self-experience in the army; from a criticism of modern technology to telling about our dreams and nightmares; from personal relationships to horror stories as “Souls Thief”.
5. You don’t have a keyboarder in your line-up. But on the album you use some intros, choirs and other sounds like in “Fight Against The Dragon”. Do you play that stuff live as well?
Dr. K + Napo: Before and during „Souls Thieves” recordings, keys where played by our Singer Fabio. In December 2003 we’ve officially announced Max Destefano as Keyboards Player. Even if he still doesn’t have a personal page on our website, he’s actively participating to songwriting, bringing lots of new ideas and arrangement solutions.
6. I noticed a funny thing. Reading interviews or reviews in some “very professional” webzines almost every young heavy metal band is being compared to Iron Maiden. It seems, there are no other bands in the world, ha, ha… The same was about you. I know you started as a Maiden cover band, but now I don’t hear any influences. Do you think it’s good for the scene, that every kid, who listens to metal for one year, can start a webzine and become a “redactor”?
Dr. K + Napo : Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, everyone is free to build a Website. This gives space to lots of people to write an opinion about music, cinema, sports and so on, and this is a good thing. This surely helps more bands to rise from the Underground. We think that readers are clever enough to make a distinction between novice redactors and people having an experience of years. We're happy that you didn’t find Iron Maiden influences in our Album!!!
7. If you were a big, known band and you could invite any band you wish as a support act for the world tour, who would you choose, and why?
Dr. K : Angra, because they are great musicians and their last 2 albums are simply fantastic!!
Napo : Rammstein (I really want to meet them ;););) )
8. The works with the new CD are in progress. I know you’re looking for a label. Does it mean, that Steelborn Records aren’t interested in your next album, or you think you are ready to sign with some major label?
Dr. K + Napo: Probably Steelborn Records is interested to our 2nd Album but we didn’t talk about this, yet. We’ll try to find a major label before presenting the new songs to Steelborn, this for 1000 obvious reasons!
